Threefold Goal

One very important question that deserves to be answered is, why do we embrace Ingwine Heathenship? What do we hope to gain from practicing it as individuals? We will answer that question here with a short discussion of three concepts: hælu, freod, and gástedóm. As a teaching tool, consider that hælu, freod, and gástedóm can be characterized together, as a holistic principle known as the Threefold Goal in Heathenship. The Threefold Goal represents the idea that a Heathen should strive to cultivate a balanced life in three areas: physical health and well-being (hælu), social harmony and community (freod), and spiritual connection and devotion (gástedóm).

Hælu, which translates to “wholeness” or “health”, is the foundation of physical and mental well-being. It represents the idea of being in a state of balance and harmony, both within oneself and with the natural world. In a heathen Germanic religion, hælu can be seen as the pursuit of a holistic way of life. It also captures the idea of physical and mental health, and material sufficiency.

Freod, which translates to “peace” or “freedom”, is the foundation of social harmony and community. It represents the idea of being free from harm and conflict, and living in a state of mutual respect and cooperation with others. In a heathen Germanic religion such as ours, freod (also called friþ) can be seen as the spirit of goodwill. To seek freod is to promote communication over conflict where possible, and to pursue a harmonious way of life.

Gástedóm, which translates to “spirituality”, is the foundation of the spiritual life. It represents the idea of being connected to the gods and goddesses, and living in accordance with their lessons to us. In Ingwine Heathenship , gástedóm can be seen as choice to seek connections to the divine, and the pursuit of a spiritual way of life.

Therefore; hælu, freod, and gástedóm can be seen as the three foundations of Ingwine Heathen religion. By pursuing these goals in all aspects of life, and cultivating a deep connection to our friends, families, the natural world and the divine through them, we can achieve a state of spiritual wholeness and fulfillment. Through living in harmony with ourselves, others, and the world around us, we can honor the gods and ancestors and create a meaningful and fulfilling life.
