The Flemish and Dutch have an old tradition, when the winter arrives, the dead return. We put a candle by the window so they know they are welcome. I use this Joelkandelaar, when the licht is welcomed back at Bikkebrenne with the arrival of spring, I blow it out. I leave the candle in it all summer. Sunne embellishes the candle with the power of light. As Sunne retreats again from Midgard and the dark returns I light it again. It is a beacon not only for the ancestors but also for the living, it is the symbol of the light. Even when Sunne is gone, its power is in the homestead.
