This is from a Baltic ceremony, but is interesting nevertheless.

In Baltic languages this site, or the idols can referred to as “alkas” or “elks.” These words are directly cognate with Old English “ealh” which is glossed by Aldheim as a pagan temple.

There is also the rune Eolhx which is super similar looking, and while it literally means Elk-Sedge, it is used to denote a protected place.
